Carrie Underwood arrives at the 40th American Music Awards in Los Angeles, on Nov. 18, 2012.
Country star Carrie Underwood takes on the role of Maria in NBC’s live performance of The Sound of Music, which is based on the Broadway play, not the classic 1965 film. Fans of the movie are split on whether or not Underwood will succeed. But NBC certainly hopes she does. The Hollywood Reporter says the production reportedly cost the network close to $9 million. If the show is a hit, NBC could make up the expense with future airings, potentially turning the program into a holiday staple.
