When First Lady Michelle Obama first hit the campaign trail, she took up issues close to her own experience and spoke with many working women about how her husband might help them. She was not prepared, however, for the conversations she had with military spouses. “Their stories took my breath away,” said Obama of their multiple moves and long separations from family members. This Thanksgiving, she’s thankful for these families, and encourages support for them through Joining Forces, the effort she and Dr. Jill Biden began in 2011.
Michelle Obama, along with David Ortiz, Joe Biden, and more told TIME what they were thankful for this Thanksgiving.
